Green and Brown

This sweet green and brown wedding has lots of soft florals and vintage-inspired touches. These pretty green hobnail tumblers would make great centerpieces. A few soft ivory blooms in each glass would be all you need for pretty, inexpensive wedding decor (the glasses are only $10 each).

For DIY-minded brides (and grooms!), the last initial made up of buttons would be a fun, easy project. It's adorable, and so versatile that it could be displayed in the newlyweds' home long after the wedding.

Cranberry and Ivory

Red and white remains one of the most classic and popular wedding color combinations. But I wanted to soften it up a little bit for spring, so here is a wedding inspiration board featuring cranberry and ivory.

The classic color scheme and traditional flowers make the unique details—such as the heart-themed wedding invitation and the monochromatic snack bar—stand out all the more.

Purple and Gray

I recently came across this beautiful photo of a stairway covered in purple flowers. It's such a dreamy, romantic picture that I immediately wanted to build a wedding inspiration board around it.

Purple and gray are two of my favorite colors, and though I have put together many wedding inspiration boards using each color, I found that I had not yet paired the two! So, inspired by one lovely photo, here is a springtime purple and gray wedding celebration:

Pale Pink and Yellow

Looking back, I have not featured many wedding inspiration boards incorporating pale pink. But I so strongly associate the color with spring (I think it must be the cherry blossoms!) that I find myself drawn to images containing pale pink these days.

The pink topaz stud earrings and pink patent d'Orsay pumps are both beautiful and classic, but also just enough of a departure from what brides typically wear on their wedding days to make a bit of a statement. Who wants to be a cookie-cutter bride, after all?

Light Blue and Orange

I love high-contrast color combinations, and blue and orange is one of my favorite pairings. I wanted to do a wedding inspiration board bringing the two together for a pretty outdoor wedding celebration, and here it is!

Now, a note on the bridesmaid dress: I have posted this bridesmaid dress before. I know in this picture it doesn't look like much, but I've worn this dress as a bridesmaid, and it remains the most flattering, comfortable dress I own! It looks great on a wide range of body types, and because it's not strapless, no fancy bra or special tailoring is necessary. It's released in new colors regularly, so you can get it in a shade that works with your season and style. And at just $138, it's a bargain. I highly recommend this bridesmaid dress to all brides! It's comfortable, versatile and classic.

Spring Yellow

Yesterday's inspiration board was inspired by the softness of spring; this one is inspired by the yellow of spring's cheery, sunny daffodils, and by the playfulness of billy balls (which I feature twice on this inspiration board).

I love bright nail polish as a way to add just a touch of bold color. Even if you are not sure whether bright nail polish is for you, it's worth a try! For one thing, it comes right off; also, many stores have great return policies, allowing you to take back products that don't work for you.

Hello, everyone!

Well, I got a surprise when I returned to work yesterday--a promotion! While I was in charge of five people before, I am now in charge of 30 and have a new title, expanded duties, a raise, the whole works. I'm excited about the possibilities but entirely too overwhelmed this week to devote any time to creating wedding inspiration boards, so Wedding Inspirations is on hold until June 23.

I will devote some time to making some this weekend that you all can enjoy next week! My apologies, but I will be back soon!

Today I returned to an old friend: aqua. I love, love, love this color. I love how it looks when paired with yellow and when paired with red, so I figured, why not corals and peaches? Maybe it's the best of both worlds! Dahlias are another favorite of mine. I love how much variety they have--so many possibilities!

The second inspiration board of the day diverges from the week of bold, bright colors. This one is for a summery, laid-back orchard wedding celebration with a rustic country feel. I would keep the flowers to a minimum and decorate instead with lots of candles (I love the warmth that candlelight adds!) and fruits.

This wedding has a bit of a casual, care-free vibe to it. It's pretty but laid-back at the same time. I think that having a set color scheme but variety in the stationery and flowers keeps it eclectic rather than too structured.

Brown Sugar Design

Designing the printed materials for our wedding is going to be a fun (if time-consuming) project for me, but after looking at the website of Brown Sugar Design, I'm tempted to turn the project over to them!

Brown Sugar Design is comprised of Jonathan and Whitney Speir, who will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary this fall. The husband and wife team, based in Kirkland, Washington, works with each client to create a customized package of printed materials.

They do such gorgeous, flawless, detailed work! I love it and just had to share.

I saw this dress by Jenny Lee and fell for it hard. I decided to go with a subtle color scheme of pale pinks, greens, ivories and white. This wedding is sophisticated and romantic, with lots of soft textures--from the dress to the flowers.

I also love how, in the invitation from Papel Vivo, the complexity of the delicate pink scrollwork is balanced by the simplicity of the all-lowercase, no-fuss font. It's a little unexpected, and I love unusual touches like that.

Aqua And White

Aqua is my favorite color and has been for years, so I love creating inspiration boards with it. I saw this dramatic stephanotis bouquet from Paradise Delight the other day and right away wanted to do an aqua and white inspiration board.

Also, this is the second board in a row in which I've used rock candy as one of the elements. I love the idea of rock candy because it's bright, sweet and summery, and can be made to work with any color scheme!

Grass Green And Blackberry

Yesterday I posted a citron and blueberry inspiration board inspired by a citron and blackberry inspiration board designed by Kathryn at snippet & ink. Today, I am posting another inspiration board inspired by Kathryn's citron and blackberry one. This one is grass green and blackberry.

In her original post, Kathryn expressed that she'd been hesitant to use the citron and blackberry combination--even though it turned out spectacularly--because the combination was a lot of powerful color and a lot of contrast. So I decided to play around a little with the combo and keep its roots, but tone it down and make it a little more accessible. Yesterday, I paired the citron with navy blue; today, I paired the blackberry with grass green. I like how the feeling of this board is sweet and pretty but a little bit rustic.

Incidentally, I never really realized how much I actually like purple until I started creating inspiration boards!

Citron And Blueberry

Kathryn, the creative genius behind snippet & ink, recently posted a citron and blackberry inspiration board. While I love that color scheme--lime green and deep purple--she didn't seem convinced it worked (though it was popular with her readers!).

I decided to give a citron and blueberry (rather than blackberry) board a try. The combination of the in-your-face lime green with classic navy tones the combo down a little bit, for those who are wary of too much bold color. Also, blue and green are neighbors on the color wheel, while purple and green are near opposites, so there is a little bit less contrast in the citron and blueberry combination.

Another take on the citron and blackberry combination is grass green and blackberry. This green and purple combo still has a lot of contrast, but the effect is calmer and more subtle when the green is made cooler and deeper. Check for my grass green and blackberry inspiration board tomorrow!

Short Wedding Dresses

It's almost Memorial Day weekend, which means summer weddings. In my mind, summertime is the perfect time for brides to try a short wedding dress rather than a floor-length one--especially if they are having a destination wedding, or having a backyard, courthouse, casual or morning ceremony.

So, in looking around at dresses for rehearsal dinners, I also came across many that would be perfect as wedding dresses for the bride who doesn't want a long dress. Below are some of my favorites!

Berry, Aqua, Green

I saw this cake on Brides.com and loved how the soft pale green of the cake looked against the berry-colored background and decided that a berry, green and aqua inspiration board was in order. I love how the romantic yet icy shades of green and pale aqua are balanced by the bold warmth of the berry.

I love the Roaring Twenties and the Art Deco movement--in architecture, art and fashion--so I decided I needed to do an Art Deco-themed inspiration board. I didn't focus too much on the color scheme for this one; while it's mostly blue, green, yellow, ivory and metallics, I was much more concerned about the style all flowing together and becoming cohesive than about having a strict color scheme. The colors are secondary to the era in this inspiration board.

It's a sunny and beautiful 82 degrees in Seattle today, and since--my fiance aside--there are few things I love more than summery dresses, I decided to put together boards of different dresses that would be perfect for wearing to a rehearsal dinner. The dresses on this board, the first of three boards, are all $150 or less.

The dresses on the second board are all $500 or less and the dresses on the last board are more than $500. I know that the more expensive dresses aren't necessarily practical, but they are gorgeous. And even if you can't afford (or justify!) them, you can still be inspired by them! So look for the second and third rehearsal dress boards (along with your regularly scheduled wedding inspiration board) on Monday.

I saw this necklace from Fay Cullen (if I win the lottery--though my odds would increase ever-so-slightly if I actually, you know, purchased lottery tickets--I am going to buy something from Fay Cullen) and knew I had to use it as the keystone of a purple inspiration board. I love bold-colored and pear-shaped stones, so I fell for this necklace hard when I saw it!

Anyway, I thought this amazing and dramatic necklace called for equally amazing and dramatic elements to surround it, especially because purple is such a regal color.

Royal, Yellow, Gold

Yesterday, I did a post for Tracy, who wants a cranberry and pistachio color scheme for her wedding, but has mainly found venues that are predominantly navy in color. That board incorporated navy into the cranberry and pistachio color scheme.

She has been thinking of going with a royal and canary yellow color scheme instead, but doesn't feel that the color scheme has warmth to it. So I put an inspiration board mainly in royal and yellow, but with hints of gold and bronze to warm it up. I also varied the shades of yellow so that the scheme wasn't made to feel flat by the use of just one clear, sunshiney yellow. The range of pale creamy yellows to the deep orangey yellows have more depth and interest for the eye.

Incidentally, I have worn this bridesmaid dress before (in maroon) and loved it--it's flattering on everyone (even the bridesmaid who had recently had a baby), comfortable, easy to dance in and it doesn't require a strapless bra! Also, it's affordable, priced at just $158. And yes, I have worn it again! Anyway, that's the end of my little commercial for this particular bridesmaid dress. On to the board!

Cranberry, Pistachio, Navy

This post is for Tracy, who envisions a cranberry and pistachio color scheme for her wedding, but is running into a lot of venues that are predominantly navy in color. Cranberry And Pistachio

Two of my favorite flavors are cranberry and pistachio. I was snacking on some Craisins and got to wondering what these two colors would look like together. Sadly, I don't think there is a muse of hunger! But I thought it would be a fun challenge to give a fresh, non-Christmas-y take on the pairing of red and green. So, here is an inspiration board inspired by snack food!

Incidentally, I am 100% in lust with the ruby and diamond earrings featured on this board. They are just stunning. (If you love to drool over vintage, estate and antique jewelry as much as I do, hurry over to Fay Cullen to get your fix!)

Navy And Wheat

Navy and yellow is a great color palette, and as I've said previously, I love just about any shade of blue and yellow together. I started wondering what else might go well with navy, and then I saw this Nicole Miller dress, loved the warm sheen of the navy fabric, and decided to give a navy and wheat inspiration board a shot. As much as I love the combination of chocolate brown and light or Tiffany blue, after compiling this board, I think I like the navy and wheat combo even better! Just as sophisticated, but less expected.

Also unexpected are the wheat boutonniere and centerpiece--lighthearted touches as a nod to the color scheme. In fact, this wedding ended up having a bunch of unusual touches, from the not-your-everyday bridesmaid dress to the way the reception tables are lit (the white of that table is actually light; click here to see the original, full-size image).

And I'd like to take just a second to sing Reem Acra's praises. The wedding dress featured in this inspiration board is all kinds of beautiful. I love it!

Finally, a question. I have been to five weddings so far this year, and at all but one of the weddings, the cake has had a color-scheme-coordinated ribbon around the base of each layer of cake. I love this look, and was considering it for my own wedding, but now I'm thinking it might be too much of a trend and might look dated a few years down the road (you know, "oh, that's so 2008!"). What do you all think? Is this look too trendy right now? How will it hold up over time?

After the previous board's somewhat formal all-white wedding, I decided to create a board that's a little more playful and a lot more colorful. This wedding has a polka dot theme and a bright color scheme of pink, orange and green. I know it's an overdone color scheme, but I must admit it's one that I love, and I think that, because it's so fun and vibrant, it goes perfectly with a polka dots theme.

Mexican Wedding

Today is Cinco de Mayo, which of course means that today's inspiration board is Mexican-themed! Bright colors reminiscent of the sun and sand, invitations that feature Mexico, fans and margaritas to keep the guests cool, a mariachi band, Mexican paper flowers for the bouquet, traditional luminaries incorporated into the centerpieces, Mexican wedding cookies as favors and a reception on the beach are all possible elements of a fun, Mexican-themed wedding or a destination wedding in Mexico. I went with a warm, vibrant color scheme of red, orange, yellow and gold, naturally.

The sunshine and wildflowers of spring provide a great starting point for an inspiration board. Today's the last day of April, so a spring inspiration board is in order! This one is for a relaxed, colorful, eclectic wedding with a vaguely bohemian feel--nothing too formal or too structured.

Light yellow bridesmaid dresses would work with whatever color of wildflowers are available in your area. Using local ingredients--from the food to the flowers--for a wedding is one way to lessen the negative impact of a wedding on the planet! Plantable invitations made from paper containing wildflower seeds are another eco chic trick.

Aqua And Cranberry

I am going to do back-to-back inspiration boards today and tomorrow with colors from the blue and red families. The first will be an aqua and cranberry inspiration board, with the playfulness of the aqua being countered by the sophistication of the cranberry. The second will be a navy and pink inspiration board, with the brightness of the pink playing up the deep elegance of the navy.

Paris, France

Paris, a city famous for its romance, seems like a perfect starting point for an inspiration board! Because of its "City of Lights" nickname, I decided to go with a silver and gold color scheme. A fleur de lis theme is adds another touch of Parisian influence.

A wedding inspired by Paris would of course have a croquembouche for the wedding cake. Champagne would be front and center at the reception. Fleur de lis bottle stoppers are the perfect favor and can be used to decorate each place setting. Votive candle holders and invitations adorned with a fleur de lis add a bit more depth to a subtle fleur de lis theme.

The overall feel of this wedding is rich, classic, timeless elegance, with a bit of a nod to Paris.

Green And Yellow

I love spring--the smells, the sights, the sounds. The world coming to life again after a winter of rest. And, most importantly, a new baseball season! But, as evidenced by June being the most popular wedding month, I am far from the only one who loves spring. I love spring weddings--how everything feels so fresh, new and exciting.

I can't think of a color combination that evokes spring more than simple green and yellow, which are reminiscent of new growth and sunshine. This inspiration board is dedicated to spring!

Ultra Feminine

My last inspiration board was for a somewhat preppy nautical-themed wedding. But then I wondered, what would the opposite direction from that be?

How about an ultra feminine wedding with a pink, white, green and silver color scheme, lots of peonies and candlelight? Something soft, girly, romantic and beautiful--an elaborate cake, a ballgown with beading, a wedding fit for a princess? These are exactly the sorts of things that would comprise an ultra feminine wedding. And while this is not my personal style, I think this inspiration board shows that such a wedding can be elegantly done:

Nautical Navy

I came across this cake and decided to use it as the basis of a nautical-themed inspiration board with a white and navy color scheme. I grew up in a town on the beach and love the ocean, so I am always drawn to the pictures I see of seaside and nautical weddings.

Simple, classic--even preppy--wedding attire perfectly suits a nautical-themed seaside wedding. For the groom, a tan suit; for the bride, a simple strapless dress and classic veil and updo. Navy shift dresses are perfect for the bridesmaids. White and blue flowers evoke the sea and the sky.

A themed wedding can easily go overboard, but a careful balance of nautical touches throughout comes across as polished. Sail-shaped save the date cards; flag-shaped escort cards; lanterns included in the centerpieces; a lighthouse and a compass rose adorning the cake; displaying programs in sand-filled vases; and sea stars or shells at each place setting are just a few ideas.

Orange Crush

A good friend of mine loves the color orange, so I created this inspiration board with her in mind, using shades of orange ranging from a soft, pale peach to a deep blood orange. Orange gerbera daisies are a natural choice for an orange wedding--the color and the flowers are both distinctive and bright. And of course, actual oranges can be incorporated into the decor.

In addition to being used in the centerpieces, food can be an extension of the color palette--steamed shrimp and carrots, blood orange cocktails, etc.

Circles are sort of a secondary theme of this wedding, from the shape of the daisies and orange slices to the dots on the cake, and the paper lanterns hung from the ceiling to the round tables.

The wedding has clean lines and a bit of a retro feel--just my friend's style.

Black And White Toile

I love toile and think it would be a great theme around which to base a wedding. For this inspiration board, I used black and white toile and accented with red and pink. The flowing, flutter sleeve dresses, roses and feminine accent colors give the wedding a romantic feel, but the predominance of black and white in the color scheme retains an air of formality and does not become overly girly.

For centerpieces, toile teapots could be filled with red and pink roses.

The neckline of the dress is reminiscent of a tulip. I decided to make a tulip-themed inspiration board, pairing the light and flowy dress with the flowers that epitomize springtime. I chose a red and yellow color scheme for a bright, cheerful vibe. The vibrant color scheme represents how full of life spring is, while the red cocktails garnished with lemon slices invite thoughts of summer. The overall feeling of this wedding is charming, cheerful laid-back simplicity.

Silver and gold is a classic combination. Silver and coral takes the same play on the combination of cool and warm and kicks it up a notch. Coral is more unexpected than gold--it's a bolder color that packs more of a punch--but coral and silver still manages to exude elegance. The combination calls for luxe fabrics and lush flowers. Eco Chic

With the global climate crisis on many people's minds, a reduced carbon footprint is a trend that can help. By using natural, organic, recycled, re-used and re-usable materials wherever possible, couples can minimize the impact their wedding will have on the environment. Dresses that bridesmaids would wear again are practical.

With a predominantly green color scheme and a rustic, outdoorsy vibe, the "green" message will get across without Al Gore having to come make a PowerPoint presentation.

Silk is perfect for an eco-friendly wedding gown. For the bridal bouquet, a loose nosegay of white ranunculus and greenery is beautiful but not too formal. Cotton bridesmaid dresses in grass green are environmentally friendly and sure to be worn again. For the bridesmaid bouquets, pink ranunculus contrast with bright green hypericum berries and provide a pop of color against the green dresses. Engraved recycled white gold rings are the perfect symbol of commitment for a eco-concious couple. A boutonniere made of white ranunculus blooms is a whimsical touch. Planters of wheatgrass make for simple and vivid centerpieces. For the groom and groomsmen, a streamlined cotton suit is a natural choice. A cake with scattered dots and painted wheat grass continues the theme begun by the centerpieces. A lush green garden is the perfect setting for an eco chic wedding.
